If you take a circumstantial map of the world and lead your eyes to the South-West from the capital of Russia – Moscow - you will see a little city, called Bryansk. With the population of 1,5 mln people it became now one of historical centre of Russia. Bryansk is one of the beautiful city in Russia.             Contemporary Bryansk is a large industrial and cultural centre. The Desna river divides the city into four districts. Sovetsky district is the administrative center of Bryansk. The largest district is the industrial Bezitsky district. The young and quickly developing districts are Volodarsky and Fokinsky. In 1985 the city of Bryansk celebrated its Millennium. In connection with the jubilee Bryansk was awarded yet another order – the Labour Red Banner Order. In summer of 1997 in Paris the results of a competition for the prize of “Gold Mercury” were announced. This prize for the achievements in architecture and city building was given, alongside with some other Russian cities, to Bryansk.
            Bryansk is noticeable among the cities of central Russia for its highly developed industry. The production of Bryansk enterprises is well-known not only in Russia but also in many countries in the world. There are ship engines and diesel locomotives, railway carriages, tractors and automobiles, steel casting and textiles, modern machines, electric and electronic equipment. For high quality of their production and broad development of economic cooperation, a number of city enterprises were given many international rewards.
            The railway junction of Bryansk is one of the largest in Russia. The trains leave from the station of Bryansk-Orlovsky in seven directions: to Moscow, St. Peterburg, the cities of the fertile zone, to the Baltic countries, to the Ukraine, Belorussia, Moldova. An international air-port was put into operation in 1994.

           In Bryansk there are three theatres - the Drama Theater, the Theatre of young Specktator, the Puppet Theatre, - the Circus, the Philharmonic Society, four museums: the Museum of Regional Studies, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Literature Museum, the Museum called "Bryansk les" [i.e. Bryansk forest]. The citizen of Bryansk and the guests of the city like to visit the memorial museums of the classics of Russian literature, our countrymen - Feodor Tyutchev [the Museum is situated in the village of Ovstug] and Alexey Tolstoi [the Museum is situated in the village of Krasnyi Rog].
            One of the most popular sights of Bryansk is the Tolstoi park-museum [founded in 1936]. This park won general appreciation not only in Russia but also abroad thanks to its wooden sculptures and compositions referring to historic and fairy images.
            The citizens like to spend their spare time in the famous Bryansk forest, which is a beautiful place, good for picking-up mushrooms and berries, for hunting and fishing in the clean forest rivers and lakes. The beauties of the famous Bryansk forests were marked both by the poets of the past and the poets of the present. The forests occupy nowadays 31,3% of the territory of our region, there are more than 100 cubic meters of wood per each resident of our region.
            In 1975 on the Bryansk soil, in the place where the borders of Russia, Belorussia and the Ukraine meet, the Druzba monument [the Friendship monument] was opened. The representatives of the Bryansk region [Russia], the Chernigov region [Ukraine], the Gomel region [Belorussia] meet here to take part in the festivities.
            Bryansk lives together with the rest of Russia in the time of great changes at the end of the 20th century. The process of the new social-economic relations coming into all spheres of life is far from being simple.
